\napproach to hosting and harvesting collaborative conversations about
\nquestions that matter. The process is designed to evoke and make
\nvisible the collective intelligence of a group, increasing
\nparticipants\u2019 capacity to create shared meaning, discover new
\nknowledge, and foster innovation across organizational, social, or
\ncultural boundaries that ordinarily get in the way of collaboration.
\nToday, this research-based and field-tested approach to strategic
\ndialogue, multi-stakeholder engagement, intergenerational
\ncollaboration, and cooperative action has been enthusiastically
\nembraced by people around the world, in virtually every field and all
\nsectors, who are working to catalyze positive change. Through their
\nefforts, innovative approaches to critical issues in socially
\nresponsible business, health care, education, environmental protection,
\nsocial welfare, conflict resolution, sustainable development, and many
\nother fields are being discovered and implemented.<\/p>\n
\nnewly-announced partnership is especially appropriate given the
\nsingular role that the Fielding Graduate University has played in the
\ndevelopment and dissemination of the World Caf\u00e9. Juanita Brown\u2019s 2001
\ndissertation at Fielding was the basis for her award-winning book The
\nWorld Caf\u00e9: Shaping Our Futures Through Conversations That Matter
\n(Berrett-Koehler, 2005), now available in seven languages. Fielding
\nTrustee Bo Gyllenpalm, a member of Juanita\u2019s doctoral committee
\n(chaired by Libby Douvan), has used the World Caf\u00e9 with Fielding
\nstudents and faculty and pioneered the development of virtual dialogues
\nbased on the World Caf\u00e9 process and design principles in the M.A.
\nProgram in Organization Management and Development. Current and former
\nfaculty members Fred Steier, Don Bushnell, Will McWhinney, Sara Cobb,
\nand others have played key roles in the conceptual development of the
\nWorld Caf\u00e9 and its use as a research methodology. <\/p>\n
\nthat the work I began in my dissertation now has the opportunity to be
\ndeveloped in creative ways that will support both high-quality,
\ngrounded research and more powerful action in the service of
\nlife-affirming futures,\u201d said Juanita Brown. \u201cAround the world, there\u2019s
\na growing recognition that conversation, community formation, and
\ninnovation are the living roots of transformative change in every field
\nand system, and that the power to re-make our world lies in everyone\u2019s
\nhands.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nInnovation and the World Caf\u00e9 Community Foundation will strengthen the
\ndevelopment of the World Caf\u00e9 as a valid methodology for co-evolving
\nsocial knowledge with a strong epistemological foundation. Faculty,
\nstudents, and leading practitioners from the global World Caf\u00e9 network
\nwill collaborate on a wide range of initiatives, including
\ndissertations that use the World Caf\u00e9 as a primary research
\nmethodology; monographs and peer-reviewed publications; case studies;
\ndevelopment of the next generation of World Caf\u00e9 process tools;
\nmeetings of theorists, researchers, and practitioners, and seminars for
\nstudents, faculty, and Fielding program associates. We also anticipate
\nexploring how the World Caf\u00e9 can contribute to special projects
\nsponsored by the Institute for Social Innovation, such as the Democracy
\nAction Project, the Transformative Learning and Social Justice program,
\nand the Information Society and Knowledge Organization concentration.<\/p>\n
\naction research and appreciative inquiry, the World Caf\u00e9 is a process
\nwith deep conceptual foundations that can support new and powerful
\napproaches to research on human and organization development,\u201d said Bo
\nGyllenpalm. \u201cThis partnership will strengthen both Fielding as an
\ninstitution and the World Caf\u00e9 as a social innovation in the global
\nacademic and social change communities.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nrecognizes that the World Caf\u00e9 is both a process that fosters social
\ninnovation (catalyzing insights and generating new knowledge through
\ninterlinking conversations about questions that matter) and a social
\ninnovation itself, in terms of how the World Caf\u00e9 process and
\nprinciples, based on living systems thinking, have spread throughout
\nthe world and given rise to a rapidly growing, global community of
\npractice. As such, a deeper understanding of the World Caf\u00e9\u2019s
\norganizing principles and patterns can contribute to the quests for new
\nforms of leadership, new tools for innovation, and creative approaches
\nto positive whole systems change. <\/p>\n
