{"id":531,"date":"2009-09-26T17:49:47","date_gmt":"2009-09-26T21:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theworldcafe.com\/my-entry-2"},"modified":"2015-08-16T02:40:03","modified_gmt":"2015-08-16T02:40:03","slug":"conversation-and-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theworldcafe.com\/conversation-and-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Conversation and Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>David Isaacs sent me this quote from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterblock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Block<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>My belief is that the way we create conversations that overcome the fragmented nature<br \/>\nof our communities is what creates an alternative future.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This can be a difficult stance to take for we have a deeply held belief that the way to make a difference in the world is to define problems and needs and then recommend actions to solve those needs.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We are all problem solvers, action oriented and results minded. It is illegal in this culture to leave a meeting without a to-do list.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We want measurable outcomes and we want them now.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What is hard to grasp is that it is this very mindset which prevents anything fundamental from changing.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We cannot problem solve our way into fundamental change, or transformation.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This is not an argument against problem solving; it is an intention to shift the context and language within which problem solving takes place.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Authentic transformation is about a shift in context and a shift in language and conversation.
